About MOL204

The explosive growth in generation of bioinformatical data and the need to use bioinformatical tools in all aspects of molecular biological research has been the primary reason for making this course. While this course is intended for molecular biologists as a users course, the Department of informatics provides an educational programme for those who wish to learn how to develop bioinformatical tools including INF380.

The course was founded by professor Rein Aasland in 1999 and is organised by Pål Puntervoll. Additional lectures are given by other professors and scientists at University of Bergen (see lecture plan). On these pages you will find information about the course, materials for the lectures, exercises, etc. Note however, that we also use the UiB student portal extensively for this course. The course gives an introduction to the use of bioinformatical tools, including analysis of protein and DNA sequences, database searches, pairwise and multiple sequence alignments, prediction of secondary structure, visualisation and analysis of protein structure, and phylogenetic trees. The theoretical basis for selected key methods are discussed. Aim

The course aims to give molecular biologists hands-on training in using bioinformatical methods and give informatisists inisight in relevant bioinformatical problems that appears from molecular biology. Notes

The grades for MOL204 will be based on the final written exam (4 hours) which will be held late December.
