The program is based on the electronic submission of assignments. At the University of Bergen is Ephorus integrated study support systems Kark and My Space. The integration means that teachers can submit all written assignments to Ephorus directly from these systems. Ephorus will be searching through the submitted assignments and compares them with texts on the Internet and previously submitted texts. Upon discovery of text similarity lecturer will be notified of Ephorus by e - mail. The results must be reviewed and it will be up to the lecturer to assess whether there is reason to suspect the student for cheating or not.

Ephorus is a text recognition system which makes use of electronically delivered documents.<br>

The reason that the University of Bergen wanted to adopt such a system is that the amount of home based assignments  have increased significantly in recent years and the ability to copy other's texts thus is larger than it was previously . The goal of adopting Ephrous is primarily there to act as deterrents, so that students will avoid submitting someone else's material in his own name. As part of an effort to sensitize students to treat others' texts honest view, it prepared a guide to good use of sources for students at UiB . This guide is available on the Education pages in both Norwegian and English.
